Help Prevent Fires by Following Fire Safety Tips

A house fire can start suddenly and without warning, but some can be prevented if you take the right precautions. These fire safety tips help prevent house fires and keep you safe in the event a fire does break out.

1. Install Smoke Detectors in Your Home

One of the most basic fire safety tips is to have smoke detectors installed in your home. When a fire occurs, early detection is key, especially if a fire starts when you are asleep. Install smoke detectors throughout your house so you’re alerted to the first signs of smoke. Test the devices monthly and change your batteries at least once a year or as needed.

2. Prevent Dryer Fires

About 2,900 clothes dryer fires occur in American homes each year. The main cause of dryer fires is a full lint trap. Remove lint from your machine after every load of clothes is dried. Only use the dryer while you are home and awake so that you can respond quickly if something goes wrong. Keep a fire extinguisher in the laundry room in an easy-to-access location.

3. Fire Safety Tips for Cooking

The kitchen should also have an accessible fire extinguisher. Unattended cooking is another main cause of household fires. Never leave your stove unattended while it is on. Keep potholders, dish towels, loosely fitting clothing, and other flammable materials away from the stove when cooking.

4. Store Fire Extinguishers Within Reach

Have ready-to-use fire extinguishers within your reach in areas where fires are more likely. In case a small fire breaks out, an extinguisher will help you combat the flames and reduce damage to your property. Keep a fire extinguisher on every floor and in the garage. If a fire is already out of control, exit the house immediately and then phone for help from a safe area.
